Another new race... the PA Moonlight Trail Run

I've been working with the new Indy Trail Runners group this year on some new events for 2010. We're excited to say we will be developing a true Ultra Trail run for next year.

In the meantime, we've put together something unique. The Planet Adventure Moonlight Trail Run is an opportunity for a night time trail run. We've setup with Indy Park's Southwestway Park to hold the race on Friday, October 30th, 2009.

We'll start at 7:30 pm (sunset is 6:45) and offer both a 5k and a 15k course. Check it out!

Mountain Bike

As an adventure racer, I seem to have fallen into a rut with my mountain bike where it sits around in it's slick tires and PowerStrap pedals setup to race.

Well yesterday I changed out those pedals and tires and took the bike to Town Run. While riding the nicely groomed trails at the park I realized just how much I miss just riding trails. It sounds funny to say, but riding trails just for fun is not something I've done in the past year or so. I plan to be back tomorrow and then find a time in the next week to go to Brown County for more.

Comeback!

The last few months of race directing and Planet Adventure transition have taken their toll on me. I've struggled to find time to train, and in reality I've struggled to find much extra time for anything.

But no matter... I'm back! Thanks to great friends that are willing to ride just sub 20mph with me, I've been back on the bike 3 out of the last 5 days. I've also been out to paddle, barely getting in the monthly paddle trip with Doug (we're now at 35 months in a row of paddling at least once each month together).

Today I'm hitting the trails, hoping my knee hangs in there until next Friday's surgery. It'll be nice to get that floating chip out of there and have some knee-lock-up free training experiences. I'm shooting to be back in the game for the Hilly Hundred at the end of October.

Thank you friends!

Shallows

Well the shallows got us. We fought our way through Logansport only to run aground again just past the Wabash/Eel confluence. We were just starting to gain som optimism as the water level surged briefly, but quickly found ourselves looking at about 250 meters of limestone shelf 3 inches under water.

We contemplated things for a bit, sitting there in the middle of a river that was 100 meters across and 3 inches deep. After more discussion, we turned around and paddled back to Logansport, portaging across more limestone to get to a take out.

Walking around Logansport Indiana at 2:30 am makes for an interesting adventure in itself. We found a combined BP/Arby's and convinced the drive through guy to serve us in the closed dining room. I guess he took pity on a couple of guys wearing pfd's and looking like they lived under a bridge.... Well actually for the moment we did live under a bridge, where we left the canoe.

Regardless we have several hours to wait for our ride, so we're hanging out on some sort of limestone steps at the Little Turtle Waterway.

Shallow!

Since there's no water to paddle, we decided to do a little fishing. Of course its not terribly fair to the fish given the water level.

Good night moon!

Standing in the river....

Since there's no water, we're standing in about 8 inches of water, trying to decide where to drag the boat. We're taking a few minutes as a break in the meantime....
